=v= California Buckeye seeds are poisonous. Ohlones would grind them up and put them in dammed-up sections of creeks, which would knock out the fish. Then they’d eat the drugged fish, I guess.

    =v= Great bike, great neighborhood!

It may interest you to know that amongst the very first batch of bogus, trumped-up charges made against bicyclists arrested during the 2004 RNC was failure to remain in that particular stretch of bike lane in Herald Square.

=v= Great bike, great neighborhood! :-)

=v= I bailed at the Broadway at the previous ride, but this time I held my nose and continued on, kvetching about it the whole way. Fortunately people moved on quickly (some relooped through the tunnel), and there we were near the Golden Gate Bridge. We were by then small enough to take the bike path over to Sausalito (yes, on the shortest day of the year) but the police were having none of that.

Sounds like an awesome ride. I envy you. Sometime we must go to Gilroy Hot Spring.

I learned in botany class that natives did indeed cultivate buckeyes and eventually use them for flour. A lot of nuts that are inedible raw (like acorns) can be ok once boiled for a while to remove acids, I don’t know if buckeye is like that.
